My Entry for the Cliodhna Competition-

Cliodhna is the Celtic goddess of love and beauty. As well as being the fairy Queen of Munster and Queen of the Banshees.
History Lesson Guys!
Being from Munster myself, I really wanted to incorporate the flag of Munster with the three crowns. The crowns were originally the arms of Ireland, but have been replaced by the iconic Harp as of the 16th century. The antique Irish crown itself that inspired the flag is much older. The three crowns are believed to represent the three medieval English lordships in Munster. The blue however can be linked to the Mór Muman. The beautiful daughter of a Munster King,who wore blue robes. Also, As she's the goddess of love, I choose to dress her in a more passionate red, but the blue is continued in her jewelry and head piece! Close to her is knot-work with woven hearts. I used gold paint on all the metals and the largest knot-work, so it really shines when it catches the light. She is a Queen after all!
For different designs in the painting, I looked at different aspects of Irish and Celtic art. Designs on her headpiece come from both the terminal of a gold collar found in Gleninsheen in County Clare (8th century BC), the Book of Kells (AD 800), and a belt reliquary. Her armlet is based on one found in a bog in Derrinboy, Co. Offaly, from the later Bronze period (1200-1000 BC). Finally I added a sun disk at her back, found in Monaghan and dated to the early Bronze Age.
